Choosing the Right Course and School: A Checklist

“What school is right for me? What course should I take?” These are the most common questions students ask themselves before embarking on their college journey. These choices dictate the path that these students take and where they will eventually find themselves in the decades to come and making these choices are crucial for their futures.

Here, we have compiled a list of things students need to consider before taking that leap and making that decision that will determine where their time, energy and money goes in the foreseeable future.

First things first: Digital, Hybrid or Face to Face?

Many will argue that nothing beats a Face to Face learning environment. And they say this because it had been the way of the world pre-2020. However, because the landscape is much different these days, the safety of students is of utmost priority. It is an important–if not the most important–factor to consider when picking a school.

How safe are the students? Is there an option to do distance learning? Is there a provision for Hybrid classes? If there are Face to Face classes, are there social distancing protocols in place when venturing outside and interacting with others?

This is precisely why digital schooling might be the best bet in the coming years. Not only is safety ensured because learning is done at home, students are also given the venue to interact with one another, ensuring that their socialization and soft skills are not overlooked. While all classes are delivered online, this doesn’t mean that students need to isolate themselves completely from their fellow classmates. Socialization in digital schools was discussed in a previous article, here

Aside from safety, there are several other factors to consider when picking the right school and the right course.

a) Skills, Talents and Interests Gone are the days of simply choosing a course in a college or university because of being accepted in one institution or having only one choice. Times have certainly changed and students are now faced with multitudes of choices, courses and schools. Simply choosing a course because that was all that was available or because of popularity is no longer the case (e.g. Nursing, Medicine, Education). Students have the option to choose their courses based on what they are actually good at. If they are good with people, there is a course for them. If they are excellent at finding solutions to problems, there is a course for them, as well. If they are interested in more technical skills, there is certainly a course for them.

At MMDC, students from all walks of life and with diverse skills and backgrounds are accepted, as long as there is a passion to work. Identifying a student’s personal interests, and what they are inherently good at is one of the factors in deciding what a student wants to pursue.

b) Industry Demand In career planning, it is important for students to be aware of what the market and industry is demanding of its candidates for hire. This means that the kind of school, mode of instruction and curriculum as well as the needs of industry are important things to consider while mulling over the course and school a student goes to.

The Future Job Report of the World Economic Forum mentions that the most popular jobs looked for by recruiters and companies will all be in line with Data Analysis, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Making sure to understand what the employment trends are is very important in securing a student’s future.

c) Cost, Tuition and Financial Aid Once a student has decided on the course to take, the next item to consider is the cost of the education. While goals can be lofty, the Tuition fee, as well as the available subsidies for eligible and qualified students can be a main determinant of the school that is chosen.

MMDC has a variety of scholarship and financial aid offerings. For example, the first 500 students may qualify to get a P20,000 discount in the MMDC Pioneer Scholarship, students only need to pay P57,000 for the whole year, which is P19,000 per term.

MMDC also provides students with the devices required to study online–aside from the diverse scholarship programs available for students who might need assistance.

d) Future Job Opportunities Studying in a college or university is one thing. Getting work after graduation is another. It is important for students to consider employment opportunities after finishing college and the access that is available to them because of the degrees they just obtained.

Finding a course and a school that fits a student’s needs, while also making sure that their futures are safe can be a tough choice to make. It is important that students take the time and the energy to explore all the choices that they have in front of them. For future-proof courses, such as:
