MMDC Pioneers Digital Learning in Bacolod

What comes to mind when you think of Bacolod City? The smiles of the warm and friendly people, the Masskara Festival, and the famous Inasal, of course. Also known for its agriculture, being the country’s sugar cane capital–sweet confections, cakes, traditional pastries and delicacies, Bacolod is truly a gastronomic destination. It is unsurprising that most Bacolodnons love to eat and can eat all day and are even inclined to start food businesses of their own. But Bacolod is not just defined by these popular factors. While they are important and bring millions of tourists to Bacolod each year, it really is the people of Bacolod that make the province a better place.

Bacolod City, being a highly urbanized city, has been seeing growth in business development, modernization, and digitalization. A number of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies have set up headquarters and satellite offices in this City. In fact, the DICT declared Bacolod City as a Center of Excellence for Business Process Management based on local talent, infrastructure, cost and business environment. The newly elected Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez is also spearheading modernization efforts, together with other local officials, for e-learning, telemedicine, e-help, e-gov and free wifi, among many others.

What does this mean for those looking to choose a college or university program for their future careers? It means that Business and IT will be in high demand as Bacolod moves to becoming a smart city. Opportunities in these fields are spurred by real estate developers creating more and more business districts with BPO’s and data analytics finding their new homes here.

Digital Learning a BNEFIT to Bacolod Students

In order to continue this technological boom in Negros Occidental, a variety of organizations were created to train and empower locals on the advances of ICT in the province. One such organization is the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (BNEFIT), with whom Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC) met with last April.

During this meeting, BNEFIT Chairman of the Board and Co-Founder and now the Philippine Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) Undersecretary, Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue acknowledged MMDC’s efforts in bringing ICT and business learning opportunities to Bacolod City. She went on to state that the efforts of the stakeholders of Bacolod City joining hands with educational institutions, such as MMDC, are needed to ensure further growth of the ICT industry in Bacolod City.

In an executive briefing given by the BNEFIT last June 28, 2022, Mayor Benitez was updated on the current ICT landscape of the province, keeping in line with his prioritizing the development of digital infrastructure of Negros Occidental.
